Driveway Construction Underway

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Harsh winter weather brought a few blizzards our way in ’09/’10 (hard to forget those record snow accumulations!) and after the plowing and salting, our tired old driveway has been in major need of a facelift.  Construction began last Friday as the crew arrived bright and early to begin demolition of the first section of the driveway, from the mailboxes near the entrance closest to Greenspring Avenue to the fork at the bottom of the drive.  What, you may ask, does all of the construction involve?  It’s certainly not as easy as throwing down some new asphalt.  We’re removing built up asphalt, establishing a new road bed, repairing gravel gutters and edging stones, and finally, installing the new asphalt.

We’re asking visitors and guests to use the second driveway entrance just around the bend in Greenspring Valley Road for the next few weeks until phase one is complete.  We’ll keep you posted on the next phase of construction and our estimated time frame.

Our driveway repairs also happen to coincide with some state roadwork currently underway on Greenspring Valley Road.  If you’re hosting a midweek event, planning a stay or have scheduled an appointment at Gramercy, allow some extra time to arrive.  Crews have been directing one-way traffic through sections of the road at various times, usually between 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday – Friday.

In the meantime, we hope you’ll pardon our asphalt dust as we make these major road repairs to our driveway.  We’re looking forward to a newly-paved entrance and we’re sure you are, too!

A Maryland Wine Weekend

Great Grapes at Oregon Ridge

The weather for the weekend is looking to shape up… perfect for unwinding in the sunshine and indulging in a crisp, cold beverage of your choice. Whether your drink of choice is a sparkling white or a rich red, you’ll find something sure to tickle your taste buds at Great Grapes Wine, Arts and Food Festival at Oregon Ridge this Saturday and Sunday,  June 12 – 13.  The two day festival features over 20 Maryland wineries (and unlimited free tastings!), crafts and culinary gift items, live music, wine pairing seminars, cooking demos, and family-friendly kids activities.  Click here for more details and to purchase your tickets online.

Didn’t realize Maryland wine country is in your own backyard?  Well, it sure is a great time of year to explore the local vineyards, taste what they offer and discover that perfect bottle for your summer cookouts, evenings by a camp fire, or vacations at the beach.  Nearby wineries we frequent include…

Boordy Vineyards

Boordy Vineyards. Located in Hydes, Maryland, about a 30-minute drive from Gramercy, this family winery has been owned by the Defords since 1980 and producing some of the best local wines ever since.  You’ll find varieties including chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot, seyval blanc and vidal blanc. I personally love to grab a group of friends, a picnic blanket and some snacks and head to this Long Green Pike winery for special events.  The Midsummer Concert Series begins this Saturday, June 12th with a different band every weekend through September 4th.  Gates open between 5:30 – 5:45 p.m.  Wine, music, dancing and picnic-ing under the stars… Who could ask for a better summer night?  For a schedule of events, click here.

Basignani Winery.  Privately-owned by Bert & Lynne Basignani (a very kind, wonderful and welcoming family!), this Peidmont winery is just a short drive north on Falls Road from Gramercy, in the heart of horse country.  The twenty or so acre estate produces a limited quantity of some of the best Maryland wines.  Visit for a private tasting, tour of the vineyards, and come back to help with the fall harvest and learn more about wine making first hand.   Basignani also hosts special events throughout the year.  Enjoy TGIF Movie nights through the summer – relax with a bottle of wine and enjoy a popular open-air film and slice of brick oven pizza.  Tickets are $8 per person.  Call ahead to r.s.v.p.  For details, click here.

Here’s to enjoying the weekend ahead!  Cheers!

A happy couple…

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

With wedding season in full swing, it’s easy to get caught up in the chaos of our busy weekend schedules here at Gramercy Mansion.  But as each happy wedding couple poses for photos, smiles at one another with complete joy and truly enjoys the celebration of their new life together, we remember why we do what we do.  And those thoughtful couples who send us a note and a beautiful photo capturing a priceless memory really make our day!

Congratulations to Sherry and Dan Welte, married on May 1, 2010!  On this gorgeous spring day, they celebrated with family and friends at Gramercy with a ceremony in the lower garden overlooking Greenspring Valley followed by a reception on the garden terrace.  Thank you Sherry & Dan so much for sharing your wedding day with us!
